His 1984 novel Vampire Junction, which critics called ancestral to the Splatterpunk Movement, was elected to the '40 All-Time Greatest Horror Books' by the Horror Writers Association.

His first career was in music, but in the late 1970s he began to publish a series of innovative science fiction stories in Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine, earning him the John W. Somtow was born in Thailand and educated at Eton and Cambridge.
